Why we built ShoSoft

The origin story behind the platform, and the very ordinary frustration that started it.

This company started inside a working venue, as the in-house system at Magic Box Event Campus, a creative event venue of more than 200,000 square feet in downtown Los Angeles. It was built because the usual way of running a busy venue was costing more than anyone wanted to admit.

The frustration behind it is one most operators will recognize. It is ordinary, and that ordinariness is exactly why it is so easy to live with for years.

Why Did We Build ShoSoft?

We built ShoSoft because running a busy event venue on separate tools for the calendar, contracts, payments, and client email meant the truth about every booking lived in fragments. It began as the in-house system at Magic Box Event Campus in downtown Los Angeles, and the goal was one place where bookings, quotes, contracts, invoices, payments, inventory, and staffing could all live together.

The Problem We Lived Before We Named It

A typical independent venue keeps its calendar in one place, contracts in a folder, payments in an accounting tool, and a long thread of client emails that holds the real story of every booking. Each piece works on its own. None of them talk to each other.

So the actual job becomes holding the whole thing together in someone's head. Which deposit had landed, which proposal was still sitting unsent in a draft, which client had moved their guest count and which had not. The work of running events is physical and personal and genuinely rewarding. The work of tracking events is a second job nobody signs up for, and it is the part that keeps operators up at night.

We lived a version of that problem before we ever thought of it as a product. The underlying issue was that no single place knew the truth about the business, so the truth lived in fragments, and fragments slip.

What Other Operators Kept Describing

It is tempting to assume this is a personal failing, that a more organized person would have it handled. Talking with other independent operators, I hear a version of the same story again and again.

Most are stitching together several disconnected tools. Most have a story about a near-miss double booking, a deposit that fell through a crack, or a proposal that went out a week late. Larger operators have more staff to throw at the problem, which mostly means more people maintaining the same fragile web of spreadsheets and inboxes.

What strikes me is where the lost time comes from. It is the operator's most valuable time, the hours that should go to clients, to selling, and to actually being present at the events.

That sentence is more or less the whole reason this company exists. The goal was never a single clever feature. It was a place where the truth about a booking could finally live in one spot.

What We Set Out to Build

The idea was simple to say and hard to do. One system where bookings, the calendar across every space, quotes, contracts with e-signature, invoices and payments, inventory, and staffing all live together, so that no operator has to hold their business together in their head.

We built for the independent and mid-market operator who is wearing every hat and cannot afford for any of them to fall off. The arenas and convention centers already have software teams, and a generic project tool bent to fit events never served that operator well. A single source of truth, so the date that says open really is open.

The results are the part that keeps us going. At Magic Box, the event director says the system saves around 15 hours a week. Green Box cut about 15 hours of admin work a month, and Centertech saves about five. Those are hours handed back to the parts of the job that actually need a person.

Why It Matters

There was no clever insight about software behind any of this. There was a problem that sat in the middle of every working day for long enough that we could not look away from it.

If you run a venue and recognize the five-places-at-once feeling, start by writing down every tool your team touches between an inquiry and a paid invoice. The length of that list is the size of the problem.

We built ShoSoft so that running a venue could go back to being about the events, and less about the spreadsheet that was supposed to keep track of them.
